Web log that provides periodic reviews of movies using a new rating system in 2024. Formerly, movies were rated as a "first-date" movie and/or "first-rate movie rental". In 2022 and 2023, we rated movies on a Beer basis. See details in the sidebar below. Beginning 2024, we now use a simpler rating system - Thumbs Up/Down!

Passengers
Been enjoying the Amazon Prime movies... watched this one while doing the morning workouts. Passengers with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence is about traveling to a new planet and starting a new life... except to get there you have to be housed in life pods to suspend your aging because it takes a 120 years to get there. Chris is forced out of his pod early, lives alone for a year, then frees Jennifer from her pod... for more see IMDB. Do check it out when you get a chance!

Steve Jobs (2013)
Movie with Ashton Kutcher playing the role of Steve Jobs. Shows the start of Apple Computers, some issues encountered along the way, and ending with success circa iPod release timeframe. Overall, entertaining movie with Ashton doing a great job playing Jobs! Glad to have watched this one! For more, see IMDB.

Shot Caller
Liked this one... watched it on a whim because Game of Thrones actor playing Jamie Lannister was featured. Through a series of events our lead is convicted and sent to prison where he soon must deal with prison life. Somehow he rises above the rest and does his time... good movie with a surprise end that worked for us! For more see IMDB.

There Be Dragons
Movie set during the Spanish Civil War... would go into more detail but won't. The one Star rating is correct. First time seeing a movie with "epic" music in the background playing the entire length of the movie. Would hold on watching this one! For more see IMDB.

Wind River
Movie that has Jeremy Renner as a USFWS Ranger tasked with hunting predators like coyotes and mountain lions. However, somehow he is involved in an investigation of the murder of a young American Indian woman.
Interesting story line with a pretty good ending for those wanting justice! Would hold as a first date movie but would check it out on a rainy day when it's time to stay indoors. For more, see it on IMDB.

Allied
Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard in a WWII movie about two clandestine war fighters assign to kill a bad guy. Their cover calls for them to be married; they play their part, and successfully complete their mission. In their escape, they return to England where Brad is home based. Somehow acting married becomes reality when Brad and Marion decide to marry.
They have a child, and things seem well... until Marion is accused of being a German spy! A twist or two in the story line; entertaining movie. Would recommend renting this one when given the chance; first date appeal may not be there as the "spy" accusation may put a damper on things. For more see IMDB

The Dressmaker
Kate Winslet plays a woman with a troubled past who comes back to her hometown. She was sent away as a child for the murder of a boy. But, no one could prove she was responsible for his death. Years later she returns home to seek revenge and the truth! Lots of twists and surprises that are entertaining; all from her skills as a dressmaker! See more at IMDB!
"The Whole Truth" and "The Trial"
Double whammy on two "trial court movies".
The first has Keanu Reeves and Rene Zellweger in a trial where Rene's son killed his father. Keanu is their lawyer, and is there to plead the son's case... the ending puts a twist in things. Did not figure it out until close to the end.
The second has Matthew Modine as a lawyer who has quit his practice due to the loss of his family. On the brink of suicide, he called by a judge to be the Public Defender for a capital punishment case where his client is a man accused of murder but cannot recall anything about the event.
Predestination
Movie with Ethan Hawke that twist and turns and confuses as Ethan moves about through time traveling in the past to ensure a better future. In the end, left the movie wondering if the outcome would be plausible (assume time travel is possible, then think about it). For more, see IMDB.
New in Town
Been watching movies since we signed up for Amazon Prime. Found some older releases that are entertaining. This one has Rene Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr. as Corporate Business Woman and Union Representative, respectively. Rene is tasked with modernizing and eventually downsizing a food plant in Minnesota; Harry is there to make sure the employees are supported.

Deepwater Horizon
Mark Wahlberg and Kurt Russel in the movie about the oil platform disaster Deep Water Horizon. Shows events leading up to the incident, and places blame on BP. But, did not detail the recovery efforts to cap the well. Good movie but was hoping to see how they came up with the plan that eventually stopped the oil. From past posts online, heard it was a Master Plumber who came up with the solution! For more, see IMDB!
CHIPS 2017
Michael Pena and Dax Shephard partner together in a remake of the 70's/80' TV show CHIPs! Cameo at the end with Eric Estrada is about the only link to the TV Show but that said, had some funny moments to keep your's truly entertained. But, do beware of the sexual comments and situations that may stimey a first date! Best to watch this one with your buddies, or at least later in the relationship! For more, see IMDB.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Sequel to the Kingsman brings back old and new characters from before. Of note, is the return of Colin Firth! Since the movie is just out, will keep the review brief... if you liked the first one, then you will this one! Glad to have seen it on opening weekend! For more see IMDB.

American Assassin
Checked out the movie based on the Vince Flynn books featuring Mitch Rapp - an American bent on killing terrorists as a result of his girlfriend being killed by them.
Read part of the book... still reading it; did see some differences in the book and movie but still liked the movie.
Ending hints at future movies to come! See more on IMDB.

Wonder Woman
Movie that brings Wonder Woman onto the big screen. Gal Gadot plays Diana - a goddess and the Wonder Woman, who fights Ares the God of War. Set in World War I, Diana comes to her calling after an American Spy crash lands into the sea.
Good movie with some interesting twists and turns. Do plan to see more of Wonder Woman in the DC Comics Movie Franchise. For more, see IMDB.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Another King Arthur movie... has Charlie Hunman as King Arthur and Jude Law as Vortigren - the bad Uncle. Good movie with a different spin on the story. Glad to have waited for the DVD instead of watching at the Movie Theater. But, was pleasantly surprised on this version of the King Arthur legend. See more on IMDB.
Baywatch 2017
Movie version of the popular TV series Baywatch. Has Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the lead role Mitch and Zac Efron supporting as a failed two-time Gold Olympic Gold Medalist who is hired to be a lifeguard.
Not so great story line with cameos from the TV series characters. Better to have watched something else. See more on IMDB.

Dunkirk
War movie of the pivotal retreat of the British Army in World War II. Has great action shots and scenes. Like the point of view from land, air, and sea... but had a hard time with the flashbacks to show the different points of view. Saw it at the theater, liked it but could also have waited for the DVD. For more, see IMDB.
War for the Planet of the Apes
Sequel to the remake Planet of the Apes franchise. Going to defer to others on this one... was tired and it was a late show, ended up dozing several times during the movie. Will have to revisit when the DVD comes out. See more in IMDB.

Despicable Me 3
Third in the animated movie franchise - Despicable Me 3, has Steve Carell back as Gru! Consider it a safe First Date Movie given its cartoon origins. That said, it's a funny movie that entertains but starting to lose its appeal. Cannot lock down a reason why other than... maintaining the franchise and appealing to new viewers may be hard. See more on IMDB.

John Wick 2
Action packed movie with Keanu Reeves returning in his role as John Wick aka the "Bogey Man". Retired hit man being forced out of retirement to kill and kill and kill in the classic John Wick style - multiple shots to the head and body at close range!
Even better, there is another movie in the making for 2018!
